LITERACY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMME

• This unique literacy programme began in mid 2004. It involves all children in grades Prep, 1 and 2.
• Groups consist of half a grade at a time, taken by 2 literacy aides to the Literacy Room for an hour at least twice a week.
• The other half of the grade works with the classroom teacher on a literacy programme.
• It provides intensive literacy instruction to groups of approximately 10 children.
• The programme is based on enhancing reading, writing and spelling skills and often involves craft based activities.
• Each child’s reading progress is regularly monitored at their reading recovery levels.
• Since its inception the programme has lifted the reading standards to and above state levels.
• In 2006 and 2007 the school was awarded a “National Literacy Award” in recognition of the School’s achievement in raising the reading levels and maintaining them.
